Ok, I spent last night going through the book cover to cover. I didn't
read every word, but you really don't have to to get a feel for the kind
of information a book imparts.
Title: Exploring LightWave 3D
Author: Todd Payne
Publisher: New Era Press
Cost: $59.95 ($64.75 w/tax and shipping)
Includes: 3.5" diskette in MS-DOS format
Level: Beginner to Intermediate
My first impression of the book is that it is what the NewTek manuals
for LightWave 3D should have been. For the first full two-thirds to
three-quaters of the book, Todd covers all the basics of both Layout
and Modeler, delving into detail on parts that might be confusing to
the beginning LightWave artist (such as Metaform in Modeler).
The back portions of the book (three or four chapters) cover such items
as lighting and color theory, preproduction, storyboarding and
postproduction. All in all, I think it is an excellent book for the
beginner.
Unfortunately, I'm not a beginner. Being at a high-beginner or low-
intermediate level, I only noticed a few pearls of wisdom through my
scanning of the book that might be of interest to me. Doubtless
I'm not doing the book justice as I'm sure there are more than a few
things in there for me, but first impressions are often the most lasting.
I haven't looked at the diskette yet. Judging from the fact that there
was no real meat to the book (i.e., actual production of animations),
I'm not sure that there's anything useful to somebody at my level (who
also got LightROM2 and in.Focus at the same time as this book).
Now, my big bitch: for $59.95, the book is WAY overpriced, especially
for a beginner's book. I got Mark Thompson's in.Focus (which is pretty
damn good, if short [75 minutes]) for less than the cost of this book.
I could have also got a number of other more-advanced items (Desktop Images
videos, a full-year's subscription to LightWave PRO, etc) for less than
the cost of this single book. It seems that New Era is trying to recoupe
the costs of its late production problems, and it pisses me off a little.
I should send it back to them.
Conclusion: It is a good book for a reference to LightWave's interfaces
and techniques, but I do not recommend purchasing it unless a) the price
drops to something reasonable or b) you are a beginner who just cannot
get the hang of using LightWave 3D.
